State Duma Eases Criminal Liability for Copyright Infringement

On May 21, 2024, the State Duma passed amendments to the Criminal Code, easing liability for copyright infringement and property damage through fraud. The thresholds for major and particularly large damages will be increased. For copyright infringement, the thresholds will rise from 100,000 to 500,000 rubles and from 1 million to 2 million rubles. For property damage, from 250,000 to 1 million rubles and from 1 million to 4 million rubles. It is expected to decriminalize 26% and 20% of crimes under these articles.
