Special Examination Procedure for Trademarks with Religious Symbols (Semantics)

The Russian Ministry of Economic Development has updated the trademark registration rules, introducing a special procedure for applications involving religious symbols (semantics). According to Order No. 593, dated September 20, 2024, Rospatent is now required to refer such applications to the Interreligious Council of Russia for an expert opinion involving relevant religious organizations.

The examination of these applications will be suspended until the council's conclusion is received, which will be considered when making the final decision. If the council advises against registration, the applicant will be informed and provided with the conclusion.

The new regulations will take effect on October 21, 2024.
