IP Court: “рос” ("ros" in Cyrillic) sequence not automatically linked to Russia

By its ruling of June 16, 2025 in case No. C01-616/2025 (case No. A45-20130/2024), the Russian IP Court upheld the appellate decision and rejected a claim to compel a company to change its trade name.
The tax authority argued that the trade name "РОСНАР" derives from "Russia". The Court disagreed: the case file contains no evidence of an unequivocal association with the state. The name was registered as an abbreviation of "РегионОборонСнаряжение" (RegionOboronSnaryazhenie). The meaning of the segment "НАР" was not established, and the letter sequence "рос" appears in many Russian words and is not, by itself, a state reference.
